Ordained to the priesthood in 1968, Hernández Rivera was named auxiliary bishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1979, and then bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Caguas in 1981, resigning in 1998.[1]
