The wingspan is 29–38 mm. The wings are dark brown with no eyespots. The upperside has a submarginal row of orange dashes across both wings. The underside of the forewings repeats the upperside pattern and the hindwings have a row of yellow-cream spots.[2] Adults are on wing from July to mid-August.[3]
The larvae feed on Carex species.
"Erebia pawloskii" is now the accepted spelling for the yellow-dotted alpine, rather than "Erebia pawlowskii".[4][5][6][7]
