History
During the First Nagorno-Karabakh War, on 23 August 1993, Fuzuli was occupied by Armenian forces. All of the city's around 17,000 inhabitants were forcefully expelled and the city turned into a ghost town. The city was completely destroyed and mined after its capture by the Armenian forces.[1]
During the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war, on 17 October 2020, the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, stated that the Azerbaijani Armed Forces had retaken control of the city. The next day the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defence released video from Fuzuli, showing the Azerbaijani soldiers raising the Azerbaijani flag in the centre of the city.[2]
On 26 November 2020, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Transport, Communications and High Technologies reported that International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) accepted the appeal of the State Civil Aviation Administration to include six airports, including the airfield in Fuzuli, in the catalog of international location indices.[3] In January 2021, President Aliyev issued a decree on the construction of an international airport in Fuzuli. On 14 January, the groundbreaking ceremony for the future airport took place.[4] The runway is planned to be completed by the end of 2021.[5]
