Passenger statistics from the Office of Rail and Road |
The station is 4 1⁄2 miles (7.2 km) south of Manchester Piccadilly towards Stockport.
It was opened as Heaton Chapel & Heaton Moor in 1852 by LNWR [1846 to 1922], then run by LMS until 1948, when British Railways was formed. The station was renamed Heaton Chapel on 6 May 1974.[1]
Service
Since May 2018, the number of trains per hour going towards Manchester Piccadilly has been reduced from a maximum of five down to three. Those trains all run within a 20-minute slot, leaving over 40 minutes each hour with no service.
There are now up to four, rather than the previous five trains, each hour from Manchester Piccadilly to Heaton Chapel.[2] These run to either Alderley Edge and Crewe or towards Hazel Grove and Buxton.
During the evening, there are two trains per hour to Manchester and hourly trains to Crewe and Buxton.
On Sundays, the service to Buxton is hourly, but the service to Manchester Piccadilly is irregular with gaps of up to 3 hours during the afternoon.
The station has a ticket office, which is closed at weekends. When this is closed, access to the Manchester-bound platform is only possible via a ramp from Tatton Road North.[3]
In May 2016, the roof collapsed onto the stairs of the Manchester-bound platform.[4] This resulted in the stairs being closed on both platforms, leaving access only via long ramps to the platforms. The roof has now been repaired and reinstated.
