Kim Tae-ri

Kim Tae-ri (born April 24, 1990) is a South Korean actress. She is known for her leading role in the critically acclaimed film The Handmaiden (2016), Little Forest (2018) and in the highly rated historical drama Mr. Sunshine (2018).

In this Korean name, the family name is Kim.

Early life

Kim was born on April 24, 1990, in Seoul and has a brother who is two years older than her. She was raised by her grandmother during childhood. After graduating from Youngshin Girls' High School, Kim attended college for Media Communication at Kyung Hee University from 2008 to 2012.[1]

Career

2010–2015: Early career

Kim started her career in 2010. While a college student and working part-time jobs,[1] she appearing in theater productions and modelled in TV adverts. From 2010 to 2015, she appeared in various short films such as Citizen Zombie, What are You Looking At? and Lock Out. In 2013, she filmed the short Moon Young,[2] which debuted at the Seoul Independent Film Festival in 2015, approximately 43 minutes in length. An expanded version was theatrically released two years later.[3][4]

2016–present: High profile roles

She made her feature film debut in 2016 for Park Chan-wook's film The Handmaiden, where she was chosen from among 1,500 candidates who auditioned for the role.[5] For her role, she won various New Actress Awards, from 37th Blue Dragon Film Awards, Director's Cut Awards, 25th Buil Film Awards and Busan Film Critics Awards. Park's first impression of Kim reminded him strongly of his first meeting with actress Kang Hye-jung, who had her career breakthrough in Park's film Oldboy (2003).[6][7]

In 2017, Kim co-starred in the political thriller 1987: When the Day Comes.[8][9][10] It garnered her a nomination for Best Actress at the 55th Grand Bell Awards.

In 2018, Kim headlined the Korean film adaptation of the manga series Little Forest.[11][12] The same year, she made her small-screen debut in the period melodrama Mr. Sunshine, written by Kim Eun-sook;[13] which became a hit domestically.[14] By year end, Kim was ranked among Forbes 30 Under 30 in the Entertainment & Sports category in 2019.[15][16]

In 2021, Kim was co-star in the science fiction film Space Sweepers with Song Joong-ki. The film directed by Jo Sung-hee was released on Netflix in February.[17]

Upcoming roles

In 2021, she is set to appear in Choi Dong-hoon's upcoming sci-fi crime film Alien, which will be released in two parts.[18][19]
