- Penalty shoot-outs were introduced to the Africa Cup of Nations in 1980.
- Before 1980, only 1 of the knockout stage matches were not decided within 120 minutes. The 1974 Africa Cup of Nations final between Zaire and Zambia drew in 120 minutes, and a replay was scheduled two days later. The final replay was won by Zaire.
