Name

Madang is officially known in Malay as Kampung Madang (Kampung is sometimes spelt as Kampong),[2] which literally means 'Madang Village'.

Geography

The settlement is located in the central part of Brunei-Muara District and contiguous with the Lambak Kanan public housing to its north and Manggis to the east.[3] Madang is also one of the neighbourhoods in Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of Brunei — together with Manggis, they are the northernmost neighbourhoods in the capital.

Administration

The area and community of Madang are administered as a village, the third- and lowest-level administrative division of Brunei. Madang is one of the villages under Berakas 'B', a mukim (subdistrict) of Brunei-Muara District.[2] Its community is led by a village head (Malay: ketua kampung); the incumbent is Emran bin Ismail and has taken office since 2015.[1]

Education

There is only a school in Madang, namely Madang Religious School, which provides the Ugama or Islamic religious primary education for its resident pupils;[4] it is compulsory for the Muslim pupils in the country. Other levels of public education, that is of general primary and secondary, are obtained in schools in the nearest areas.

Religion

Place of worship

Madang has a mosque which provides its Muslim residents, as well as that of Manggis,[5] a place to conduct Islamic congregational activities, in particular the Jumu'ah or weekly Friday prayers. Suri Seri Begawan Raja Pengiran Anak Damit Mosque was inaugurated by Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah in 2014.[6] The mosque has a capacity for 2,400 worshippers.[6]
