Season one of Run BTS premiered on August 1, 2015.[1] Most episodes aired on a Tuesday, except for when an episode of BTS Gayo was released instead. The series went on a year-long hiatus after the January 5, 2016 episode. Season two premiered on January 31, 2017.[2] The series began consistent weekly airing as of the May 23, 2017 episode. Season three premiered on January 1, 2019.[3] In 2020, broadcasting of new episodes was paused twice: first for the airing of the band's documentary series Break The Silence in May, and then for their new reality show BTS In the Soop which ran from the second week of August until the third week of October.
Format
Each episode of Run BTS features the members of BTS taking on activities relevant to the episode's theme, usually in the form of games, missions or challenges, with the promise of a prize(s) if they are successful, or punishments if they fail.[4] The members tackle each mission as either a group, individual teams, or on a solo basis if required. Special episodes also feature non-competitive activities such as a fashion show and skit or drama making. Most episodes are led by an MC, with one of the band's members filling the role of host for the day, and the production staff who facilitate the missions. Jin and Suga serve as MC's the most often—J-Hope, RM, and V ocassionally assume MC duties as well. For episodes with missions that require the full group's participation, all members act as presenters.
Initial episode runtimes spanned between 8–15 minutes. From the second season onwards, they were increased to 20–40 minutes. In 2020, they were further expanded to a more consistent runtime of 30–40 minutes. Exclusive behind-the-scenes short clips are uploaded after each episode airs. These clips were originally posted on the paid BTS+ Vlive fanship channel beginning in 2017, but Big Hit Entertainment moved the clips to its official fan community platform Weverse as of January 16, 2020 as exclusive subscription-based paid content.[5]
Promotion
BTS uploaded two videos advertising the then upcoming new variety show to their V Live channel on February 28, 2015. The first video received 242,000 views and 2.24 million likes, and the second received 100,000 views and 87,000 likes within three days of being posted.[6]
Adaptation
On July 10, 2018, domestic news media announced that cable music channel Mnet would begin airing eight of the most popular Run BTS episodes on television at 6PM KST every Wednesday night beginning July 11 for eight weeks.[7] Season 2's "MT" (Ep.17–18) and "Manito" (Ep. 23–24) episodes were among those selected.[8] The eighth and final episode aired on August 29, 2018.[7]
In 2020, Mnet announced on August 6 that it would once again be airing eight of the most popular episodes from among those released between 2019–2020 as a summer vacation television special—the 100th Episode Special, Avatar Cooking King, and Photo Exhibition episodes were included in the lineup.[9] Episodes aired every Thursday night at 8PM KST from August 6 for eight weeks until September 24, 2020.[9]

- Plot summary of the short film Dalbang Dorm (달방하숙)
To settle their conflicts, the seven occupants of the Dalbang Dorm—Nam-joon, Seok-jin, Yoon-gi, Ho-seok, Ji-min, Tae-hyung and Jung-kook—gather in the common area to agree upon a set of rules that shall govern their behavior. When the meeting turns into a heated argument, the meeting’s moderator, Nam-joon, decide that each dormer should contribute an idea.
Seok-jin goes first and proposes the rule: Do not put makeup products in the refrigerator. In a flashback, Seok-jin had gone to the kitchen and discovered his co-dormers’ makeup products filling the refrigerator, leaving little space for food. When the dormers become divided on the rule, Yoon-gi suggests having a separate fridge for cosmetics.
Next, Ji-min suggests the rule: Do not put your belongings in others’ room. In a flashback, Tae-hyung had left a stuffed toy and a heart-shaped lamp in Seok-jin’s and Ji-min’s room, respectively. Tae-hyung insists to Ji-min that it was only his way of sharing his things to his fellow occupants. Yoon-gi also points out how Nam-joon did the same thing. In another flashback, Nam-joon had left a sweater in Yoon-gi’s room after a failed shopping; Yoon-gi, who also found the sweater not for his size, had left the sweater in Ho-seok’s room.
As the dormers see sharing things as a good thing for them, Ho-seok suggests canceling Ji-min’s proposed rule and offers his own: Tidy up by yourself. In a flashback, Ho-seok had found Ji-min sleeping in his room and messing up with his clothes. In another instance, Ho-seok had woke up to find clothes and ice cream wrappers littering the floor. Angered by the mess, he found the culprits—Jung-kook, Tae-hyung, and Nam-joon—idling in the common room and watching TV while eating their ice cream.
Connecting to Ho-seok’s suggestion, Ji-min reminds the group to put their shoes in order, to which Seok-jin vehemently complains, stressing the lack of space in the dorm. When Tae-hyung mutters Jung-kook’s name, Jung-kook simply responds with a "What?" The next rule is laid out: Bring an adequate amount of belongings. A flashback reveals Jung-kook bringing too many objects inside the dorm.
Suddenly, the doorbell rings and Yoon-gi reveals he had ordered chicken for their lunch. With excitement, all except Nam-joon rush out of the common area. Nam-joon, nevertheless, joins the group and the seven dormers happily enjoy their meal. - The team names include baek (백), the Sino-Korean number word for 100, signifying the 100th episode of Run BTS. The syllables seok (석) and jin (진) are taken from Jin's real name.
