History
As players born before 1 January 1991 are not eligible to compete in the 2013 AFC U-22 Asian Cup qualification tournament, the Singapore U-22 team is made up of nine players from the Courts Young Lions, as well as another nine players from various S.League sides.
In addition to that, four players were also roped in from the LionsXII squad, which plays in the Malaysia Super League.[3]
2013 AFC U-22 Asian Cup Qualification
The AFC U-22 Asian Cup is a new competition intended to promote the development of youth football in the region. The Singapore team was drawn into Group E of the 2013 AFC U-22 Asian Cup qualification tournament on 14 February 2012.[4]
The Singapore U-22 team was initially coached by Courts Young Lions coach, Robin Chitrakar. However, Chitrakar had to attend Phase Two of his AFC Pro-Diploma Course, which was conducted in Japan during the time when the qualifiers were taking place in Indonesia. On 7 June 2012, the Football Association of Singapore announced that they had appointed former Geylang United coach, Mike Wong, as the coach of the Singapore U-22 team.[5]
The 2013 AFC U-22 Asian Cup qualifiers for Group E took place in Pekanbaru, Indonesia from 5 July 2012 to 15 July 2012.
Singapore} had a good chance of advancing to the next round when they only had to beat Indonesia by one goal in the final match of Group E on 15 July 2012, after second placed Australia was beaten 5-0 by Japan in an earlier match on the same day. However, the Garuda Muda beat the Young Lions 2-0 with both goals coming from Agung Supriyanto, hence ending their 2013 AFC U-22 Asian Cup qualifying campaign.[6]
