Soběslav

Soběslav (Czech pronunciation: [ˈsobjɛslaf] (listen); German: Sobieslau) is a town in Tábor District in the South Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 6,900 inhabitants. It is situated on the river Lužnice, 7 km northern from Veselí nad Lužnicí and 18 km southern from Tábor.

History

The town was mentioned for a first time at the year 1293 when the castle and surrounding areas belonged to the house of Rožmberk. Towns rights were obtained at the year 1390. Four years later was Czech king Václav IV imprisoned in a local castle. The town was burned twice during a Hussite's wars. At the end of 19th century the town was connected by a railroad with Prague and Budweis cities. Historical part of the town is set as a town's protected zone even seriously touched by a newly built northern part of the town's main square (except historical Smrčka's house).

Transport

There is a small civil airport at the south-western part of the town border.

Sights

There is Saint Vitus Gothic church, castle of Soběslav with well-preserved tower Hláska and a church of Saints Peter and Paul. There are two museums in the town: Smrčka's house (ethnical museum) and Petr Vok house (natural history museum).

There is a natural reservation called Nový rybník in Soběslav.[2]

Nearby the town border there is a forest called Svákov with a small church of Saint Anne, old Slavonian fortress rampart and pavillon. There is an old trading road which leads through Soběslav.
