History

The first volume of the Annual Review of Medicine was published in 1950 by the nonprofit publishing company Annual Reviews. It noted that the more "active" areas of medicine would be covered in each volume, while other subdisciplines would be covered every two or three years.[2] Its first editor was Windsor C. Cutting.[3] In 1996, it was one of the first Annual Reviews journals to be published electronically.[4] As of 2020, it was published both in print and electronically. Some of its articles are available online in advance of the volume's publication date.[5]

It defines its scope as infectious disease, including HIV/AIDS; internal medicine like cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, hematology, immunology, neurology, oncology, pulmonology; and other branches of medicine such as clinical pharmacology, dermatology, genetics, pediatrics, psychiatry, reproductive medicine, and surgery.[6] As of 2019, Journal Citation Reports lists the journal's impact factor as 9.716, ranking it sixth of 138 journal titles in the category "Medicine, Research & Experimental".[1]

Editorial processes

The Annual Review of Medicine is helmed by the editor. The editor is assisted by the editorial committee, which includes associate editors, regular members, and occasionally guest editors. Guest members participate at the invitation of the editor, and serve terms of one year. All other members of the editorial committee are appointed by the Annual Reviews board of directors and serve five-year terms. The editorial committee determines which topics should be included in each volume and solicits reviews from qualified authors.[7] Unsolicited manuscripts are not accepted. Peer review of accepted manuscripts is undertaken by the editorial committee.[8]
