Expressways of India

Expressways are the highest class of roads in India. In India, expressways are controlled-access highways where entrance and exit is controlled by the use of ramps that are incorporated into the design of the expressway, whereas National highways are at-grade roads. Some roads are not access controlled, but are still officially called expressways, such as the Biju Expressway.

The majority of the investment required for constructing expressways comes from the Central Government. Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra are the only states which are investing in building expressways through dedicated expressway corporations.[1]

The National Expressways Authority of India (NEAI) operating under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways will be in-charge of the construction and maintenance of expressways.[2] The National Highways Development Project by the Government of India aims to expand the country's current expressway network and plans to add an additional 18,637 km of greenfield expressways by 2022 apart from existing national highways.[3]

Bharatmala, a centrally-sponsored and funded road and highways project of the Government of India[4] with a target of constructing 83,677 km[5] of new highways over the next five years, was started in 2018.[6] Phase I of the Bharatmala project involves the construction of 34,800 km of highways (including the remaining projects under NHDP) at an estimated cost of ₹5.35 lakh crore by 2021–22.[7]

Characteristics

Currently, approximately 1,642.5 km of expressways are operational in India.

All the expressways are six or more-lane controlled-access highways where entrance and exit is controlled by the use of slip roads.

India has one of the lowest densities of expressways in the world.[8]

National expressways

Some expressways have been declared as national expressways and numbered as such, in the manner of national highways:

National Expressway 1: Ahmedabad–Vadodara Expressway, declared as NE 1 on March 13, 1986.[9]
National Expressway 2: Eastern Peripheral Expressway, declared as NE 2 on March 30, 2006.[10]
National Expressway 3: Delhi–Meerut Expressway, declared as NE 3 on June 18, 2020.[11]
National Expressway 4: Mumbai–Vadodara Expressway, declared as NE 4 on January 10, 2020.[12]
National Expressway 5: Delhi–Gurdaspur stretch of Delhi–Amritsar–Katra Expressway, declared as NE 5 on June 25, 2020.[13]
National Expressway 5A: Amritsar–Nakodar spur of Delhi–Amritsar–Katra Expressway, declared as NE 5A on September 17, 2020.[14]
National Expressway 6: Lucknow–Kanpur Expressway, declared as NE 6 on December 15, 2020.[15]
