Israel in the Eurovision Song Contest 2010

Israel participated at the Eurovision Song Contest 2010, held in Oslo, Norway in May. The Israeli entry was performed by Harel Skaat, with the song decided by a televised national final, Kdam Eurovision, that was held in February 2010.[1]

Before Eurovision

Artist selection

On 23 December 2009, newspaper Maariv reported that Harel Skaat was selected by a special committee as the Israeli representative for the Eurovision Song Contest 2010.[2] On 25 December 2009, IBA confirmed Harel Skaat as the Israeli representative for the 2010 contest.[1][3][4] Among artists considered by the selection committee, Maya Bouskilla and Vladi Blayberg were highly considered before Skaat was ultimately selected.[5]

The song that Harel Skaat represented Israel with in Oslo was selected through a national final called Kdam Eurovision 2010. Several songs were submitted by composers, which were subsequently evaluated by a committee that selected four songs. The members of the committee were Noam Gilour (director of Kol Yisrael), Yaakov Naveh (IBA representative), Yuval Ganor (director of 88FM), Dorit Gvirtzman (director of Gil Productions), Oren Gazit (director of Reshet), Yuval Cohen (chief editor of Reshet), Gali Atari (Eurovision Song Contest 1979 winner) and Eli Avramov (musician and arranger).[6] The song titles and their songwriting teams were announced on 22 February 2010, while the songs were presented online via IBA's official website on 7 March 2010.[7][8][9]

The final took place on 2 March 2009 at the Neve Ilan TV Studios in Jerusalem, hosted by Ofer Schechter and broadcast on Channel 2.[10] All four competing songs were performed by Harel Skaat, and the winning song "Milim" was selected by a combination of the votes from six voting groups: members of the Knesset (5%), members from OGAE Israel (5%), members of the Harel Skaat fan club (5%), an expert jury consisting of Moshe Datz, Svika Pick and Mira Awad (10%), a jury of IBA representatives (25%) and votes from the public (50%).[11][12]

At Eurovision

Israel competed in the second semi-final of the contest, on 27 May. Performing 3rd at the semifinals (after Armenia and before Denmark), they advanced to the Grand Finals of the contest and placed 14th among 25 Grand Finalists. Despite of this achievement, they swept all titles at Marcel Bezençon Awards this year.
