Possible withdrawal

Israel was rumoured to have withdrawn from the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest, because the date of the final falls on the same day as Shavuot, an Israeli holiday on 26 May.[3] On 7 August 2011, IBA confirmed its participation despite difficulties due to Azerbaijan's open border with Iran.[4]

Internal selection

The Israeli entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 was planned to be selected through a new national final, to be held in January or February 2012, however it was cancelled due to scheduling problems.[5][6] Instead, a special committee shortlisted eight artists to be invited to submit songs for the 2012 contest: Cabra Casay, Chen Aharoni, Izabo, Karolina, Maya Bouskilla, Red Band, Svika Pick and Vladi Bleyberg. Five of the artists (Aharoni, Izabo, Bouskilla, Pick and Bleyberg) were reported to have submitted a song, which were subsequently evaluated by the committee that selected the entry. On 7 February 2012, IBA announced that Izabo were selected as the Israeli representatives for the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 with the song "Time".[7][8]

At Eurovision

Israel competed in the second half of the first semi-final (10th on stage) on 22 May 2012, following Finland and preceding the San Marino. Israel received 33 points and placed 13th, thus failing to qualify for the final on 26 May.[1]

Split results

  • In the semi-final Israel came 13th with 33 points: the public awarded Israel 16th place with 16 points and the jury awarded 9th place with 72 points.[9]
