Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim

Muhammad Faishal bin Ibrahim Khan Surattee[2] (Jawi: محمد فااشال بن إبراهيم) (born 16 June 1968[1]) is a Singaporean politician and associate professor. A member of the governing People's Action Party (PAP), he was appointed as Minister of State in the Ministry for Home Affairs and the Ministry for National Development since 27 July 2020 by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

He also served as Senior Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry for Education and the Ministry for Social and Family Development from 1 May 2017 to 26 July 2020. He was Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry for Education and the Ministry for Social and Family Development from 1 October 2015 to 30 April 2017, Ministry for Transport and the Ministry for Health from 1 August 2012 to 11 September 2015.[3] He was promoted from Parliamentary Secretary to Senior Parliamentary Secretary on 1 May 2017 and from Senior Parliamentary Secretary to Minister of State on 26 July 2020. He has also served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Nee Soon GRC for Nee Soon Central since 7 May 2011. He was the MP of Marine Parade GRC for Kaki Bukit from 27 April 2006 to 19 April 2011.[4]

Career

Faishal began his career at the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore, before joining the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 1996 as a Senior Tutor.[4] He became an Associate Professor of the University in 2000.

Political career

Faishal first joined parliament at the 2006 general election as an MP for the Marine Parade Group Representation Constituency (which was uncontested and resulted in a walkover).[5] At the 2011 general election, he was elected as an MP for the Nee Soon Group Representation Constituency.

In July 2012, Faishal was appointed as Parliamentary Secretary at the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Transport.[6]

In October 2015, following the Cabinet reshuffle, Faishal was appointed as Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Social and Family Development.[7]

Education

Faishal had his early education at Telok Kurau East Primary School, Bedok South Primary School, Bedok View Secondary School and Nanyang Junior College. He then went on to the National University of Singapore, where he completed Bachelor of Science (Honours) and Master of Science degrees in Real Estate Management. He subsequently earned a PhD in Management Science at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology.

Personal and family life

A Muslim, Faishal is married and has two children.[8]
