History

The village was part of the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast, which existed from 7 July 7 1923 until 26 November 1991. Armenian forces took control of the village on 11 April 1994,[2] and was controlled by the self-proclaimed Republic of Artsakh from 11 April 1994 until 3 October 2020, when it was recaptured by Azerbaijan during the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.[3][4][5]

The village was severely damaged during the 2016 Armenian–Azerbaijani clashes. Azerbaijan's armed forces temporarily took control of the village on 2 April 2016 after most of its population had been evacuated.[6]

Following the 2016 clashes, Azerbaijan claimed to have regained control over all the heights around the village.[7] However, Armenia claimed that Azerbaijan had regained control over some military posts, but did not succeed in occupying all the heights around the village.[8][9] The population of the village, which numbered 567 persons in 2005 according to Armenian sources[10] fled, and the village turn into a ghost town.[11]
