Plants usually grow to between 0.3 and 1.5 metres high.[3] The cream or pale yellow conflorescences are conical or cylindrical and appear in spring.[2]
The species was first formally described in 1830 by botanist Robert Brown. Brown assigned it the name Anadenia caleyi.[4] In 1855, Swiss botanist Carl Meissner gave the species its current name.[1]
Two subspecies are recognised:
- Grevillea ramosissima subsp. hypargyrea (F.Muell.) Olde & Marriott. This subspecies, endemic to Victoria, was first described as G. ramosissima var. hypargyrea by Victorian Government Botanist Ferdinand von Mueller.[5] The subspecies is listed as "Rare in Victoria" on the Department of Sustainability and Environment's Advisory List of Rare Or Threatened Plants In Victoria.[6] It occurs at Pine Mountain, Cudgewa Bluff and Mount Mittamatite.[5]
- Grevillea ramosissima Meisn. subsp. ramosissima, which occurs in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory.[7][8]
