The Oaks (Staunton, Virginia)
The Oaks, a historic Victorian home located in the Gospel Hill Historic District in Staunton, Virginia, is a Virginia Historic Landmark and resides on the National Register of Historic Places. Originally, it was a brick frame structure built in the 1840s and was purchased by Major Jedediah Hotchkiss in 1867. Hotchkiss reinvented the simple structure, using local craftsman to construct the 3 story brick wing in 1888-89. Architectural drawings for The Oaks were drafted by Winslow & Wetherell, to whom Hotchkiss sent many detailed plans.[2][3]

The main structure is a three-story, 21-room, shingle style brick dwelling built against a hillside. It features a complex hipped roof, sleeping porches, a 3-part round-headed window, and protruding 5-sided bay. The interior contains intricately detailed woodwork typical of the period.[2] The yard contains a fish pond, fire pit, and patio. The National Register listing included three contributing buildings, including the main house, a carriage house and an outbuilding now connected to the main house.[3]
The Oaks is in private ownership.
